The basal leaves of Sanguisorba officinalis are pinnate compound leaves, with 4-6 pairs of leaflets, which are oval or oblong ovate, round and blunt at the top, heart-shaped at the base and light heart-shaped, serrated at the edge, green on both sides. Stipules are membranous and brown. There are few cauline leaves, which are oblong to oblong lanceolate, and microcardiform to round at the base. Stipules are herbaceous and semiovate.
The flowers of Sanguisorba officinalis are spikes, oval, ovoid or cylindrical, upright. The bracts are membranous, lanceolate, apical from acuminate to tail tip, with 4 sepals, purplish red in color, oval to wide ovate, and pilose on the back. The flowering and fruiting period is from July to October.
