Hearing the word "pingpeng", people often think of wandering, no fixed residence. This comes from the poem of Du Fu in the Tang Dynasty that "moss and bamboo are good, but pingpeng has no settlement." But in fact, "pingpeng" in the poem does not mean "pingpengcao". At the same time, pingpengcao is not a floating plant. Its root is fixed in the soil under the water.
This interesting phenomenon shows pingpengcao's survival instinct. In the wild, the water level often changes due to climate or other environmental changes. Pingpengcao relies on small insects to pollinate, so flowers must rise or fall with the water surface, and try to get out of the water; moreover, each plant only opens one at a time, so that each flower can attract insects, which will not be wasted at all.
A pingpengcao plant only opens one flower at a time. When the flower is withered, other flower buds will come out of the water, forming the phenomenon of "queuing" to bloom. And the flower stems will bloom only when they stand six or seven centimeters out of the water. When the flower is about to open, if you add water to raise the water surface, the flower stem will grow rapidly, and then it will be raised to about 6 cm from the water surface before flowering; if the water level drops about 6 cm when the flower stem just rises out of the water surface, the flower stem will stop growing, and it will bloom about 6 days later; when the flower is already open, the flower stem will grow again to make the flower stand.
