The difference between osmanthus and thyme

Although they are similar, they can be distinguished by different aspects. First of all, the height of Osmanthus is higher than that of thyme, which can reach 18 meters, while thyme generally does not exceed 8 meters. Then there is the appearance. The leaves of Sweet osmanthus are mostly oval, and the ones with jiulixiang are obovate, and the length of Sweet osmanthus is large. In addition, the petioles of Osmanthus are also long. The shape and size of the fruit are also different, the former is elliptical, to be large; the latter is obovate. They also have different flowering and fruiting periods, the former from September to march of the next year, and the latter from April to December.

1. Height

First of all, we should make it clear that Sweet osmanthus is an evergreen tree or shrub, while thyme is a small arbor. Therefore, the height of the first type is much higher than that of the second. Specifically, the height of Osmanthus can even reach 18 meters. However, the height of thyme is about eight meters.

2. Appearance

(1) leaves: first, the shape of the leaves. The leaves of Sweet osmanthus are leathery, mostly oval, and some are long oval or lanceolate. The leaves of the first plant are about 7 to 14.5cm long and 2.6cm to 4.5cm wide. However, the leaves of the second plant are much smaller, about one to six centimeters long and about 0.5 to 3 centimeters wide.

3. Different flowering and fruiting periods

For the first plant, its flowering is from September to early October, and its fruiting is in March of the next year. The second plant has a flowering period from April to August and a fruiting period from September to December.
