The plant height of summer cuckoo is small and its branches and leaves are dense and full, while the shape of Rhododendron is tall and can grow to 2-3m high. Their leaves are of different shapes. The leaves of summer cuckoo are small and closely arranged; the leaves of Rhododendron are large and long. There are also differences in their flowers. The summer azalea is large, mostly single petaled, rich in color (red, pink, purple, white, etc.); while the flowers of Rhododendron are rose red and bright red.

Look different

This is the most intuitive difference between them

First of all, the difference in their overall morphology. The first kind of plant is relatively small in shape, with small branches and leaves. Its branches are relatively denser, and its crown is plump and tidy. The second kind of plant is not. Its body is very tall, can grow to two to three meters, and is very strong.

And then the shape of their leaves. The first kind of leaves are generally smaller and arranged more closely. The second kind of leaves are larger and longer.

Another is the difference between the two flowers. Generally speaking, the flowers of Rhododendron are rich in color, ranging from rose red to bright red, which usually bloom in the middle and late May to mid June; the flowers of summer azalea are very large, single petaled, with wide funnel shape, few double petals, and many colors, such as red, pink, purple, white, etc., which are relatively more diverse. In addition, for time, the latter may bloom a little later.

Different sources

That is to say, they have different origins. The first belongs to the Japanese azalea, the second belongs to the Chinese Azalea.

Different places of origin

Here we mainly talk about their distribution in the planting areas of our country. Generally speaking, the former is mostly distributed in the provinces south of the Yangtze River, such as Jiangsu, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Anhui and other provinces; the latter is relatively more widely distributed, almost all of which are planted in China, especially in the mountainous areas of Jiangxi Province, where wild rhododendrons are distributed.
