Barley stems are thick, smooth, hairless, erect, about 50 to 100 cm tall, with lanceolate ears on both sides, 9 to 20 cm long, 7 to 20 mm wide, and flat.
Spikes of wheat are erect, about 5 to 10 cm long and about 1 to 1.5 cm wide. Spikelets contain 3 to 9 flowers.
