The stem of rice is erect, 30 to 100 cm high, and the leaves are in two rows of alternate, linear lanceolate.
Spikes of wheat are erect, about 5 to 10 cm long and about 1 to 1.5 cm wide. Spikelets contain 3 to 9 flowers.

Rice fruit is caryopsis, lemma is navicular, with short awn.
