Mangosteen is a small tree, about 12-20 meters high, with many and dense branches and obvious longitudinal ribs on the twigs. Stem erect, bark dark brown, with yellow resin juice, crown conical.
Mangosteen leaves are oval or oval, with dark green surface and luster. The back is light yellow green, the tip is sharp, the edge is full, the leaves are easy to crack, and yellow resin will flow out when they break.
There are 2-9 stamens clustered on the top of the branch, with short pedicel. The stamens meet to form 4 bundles. After degeneration, the stamens are cylindrical. The female flowers are solitary or paired, and also grow on the top of the branch. The diameter of the stamens is larger than that of the male flowers, and the pedicels are slightly longer, with 4 red petals.
